The Most Energy Efficient Furnaces: Comparison Chart

*Note: The higher the Annualized Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) rating, the more efficient the furnace will be. The following furnaces all have very high AFUE ratings and are not ranked in any particular order.

How Is Furnace Efficiency Measured?

Furnace efficiency is determined by measuring the amount of heat that is produced by your furnace, captured, and then pushed into your duct-work and then comparing it to the amount that is lost with the vented combustion gases. Furnaces are given an AFUE or Annualized Fuel Utilization Efficiency rating, which will let you know how efficient they are. You can find out your current furnace’s AFUE rating by looking at your user manual. Or, it should also be listed on the cabinet of your furnace. The higher the rating, the more efficient the furnace is.

There are 3 different categories of furnace efficiency. They are as follows:

80% AFUE: These furnaces have the lowest AFUE rating. They have a single heat exchanger and are a good choice if you live in a warmer climate or if you plan to stay in your home for a short time (five years or less.) They come in Basic and Better Performance models.

90% – 96% AFUE: These furnaces have a mid-range efficiency. Most of these types of units have secondary heat exchangers that are designed to capture heat from the exhaust gases. They are also available in Basic and Better performance models.

96.5% – 98.7% AFUE: This last category is the most efficient type of furnace. They all have secondary heat exchangers and come in Best performance models. If you want one of the most energy efficient furnaces then you should choose one with an AFUE in this range. Any furnace that has an AFUE rating that is greater than 95% will also be Energy Star certified.

The higher the AFUE rating, the more efficient your furnace is
