We have more than 14 years of experience in the HVAC industry and we would love to share our knowledge with you.
We’re going to take a closer look at why having proper air circulation in your home is important, and show you how to achieve it. So let’s get started.
Poor air circulation in home can be harmful for your family
Why Poor Air Circulation in Home Is Bad
If you have poor air circulation in your home, you may notice some or all of the following:
- The temperature throughout your home is inconsistent – some rooms are colder and some rooms are warmer than others.
- You may have mold growing in certain damp areas of your home.
- The air may seem stuffy and harder to breathe because of the impurities in it
- The environment just feels unpleasant and if you have pets, their smell will linger
Poor air circulation can actually be harmful to you and your family’s health, so it is important that you try to solve this issue.
How to Deal with Poor Air Circulation in Home
Here are some steps you can take to solve the poor air circulation problem in your home. Most of these steps are easy to do, inexpensive, or in some cases, even free.
Step 1: Open Your Windows and Doors
Open your windows to improve poor air circulation in home
See, we told you that some of these ideas were free! Opening up your windows and doors is a simple and free way of getting the air circulating throughout our home. Opening windows and doors on opposite sides of your home will create a cross-flow of air and will immediately start improving your air circulation.
You might want to invest in or repair any screens you have on your windows and doors, if you are going to have them open for any length of time to keep out unwanted insects or pests.
The following video shows you how easy it is to repair a window screen:

Step 2: Install Ceiling Fans
If you don’t already have ceiling fans in your home, you may want to install some. In the 80s, ceiling fans were in style for most rooms. However, they aren’t as trendy now so you see them less. It’s too bad because using ceiling fans is a great way to get the air circulating in your home!
The good news is that there are more up-to-date ceiling fan models available now so you can still have the great circulating power you need plus the modern style you want.

Step 3: Use Portable or Window Fans
If you really don’t want to go back to a ceiling fan, you can use portable fans to improve your poor air circulation in your home. A window fan will suck clean, fresh air from outside and blow it into your home.
You can also place discreet, small portable fans in strategic locations around your home to get the air circulating better. You can buy bladeless models now in different shapes that don’t even look like a fan.

Step 4: Use Your Exhaust Fans
Most homes have exhaust fans installed above the stove to suck out hot air and fumes when you are cooking. You may also have a fan in the bathroom to suck out moist air when you are showering or taking a bath. The problem is, you probably don’t always use them!
Try to encourage your family to turn on these fans when they are in the bathroom and when they are cooking. The use of exhaust fans will help to improve poor air circulation in your home by removing air contaminants and humidity from building up inside.
Step 5: Make Sure Your Vents Are Not Blocked
Check to make sure that your floor and ceiling vents are not blocked by anything that would prevent proper airflow. You may need to move larger pieces of furniture away from them so that air can freely flow out and around your rooms.
Keep all vents clear to help with poor air circulation in home
Step 6: Set Your Furnace or Air Conditioner Fan to “ON”
Your HVAC system is equipped with a special filter – the one that you are supposed to change regularly. If you have your furnace fan set to the “ON” position then the air in your home will continually cycle through this filter.
This will remove many of the impurities that are in the air in your home and will improve your poor air circulation. This is a good idea, especially if any of your family members suffer from asthma or other breathing problems. If no one has breathing issues, then you may want to keep your furnace fan set to “auto,” as this will save you on energy costs.
Step 7: Install an Attic Vent
If you don’t have an attic vent, you may wish to get one installed. Attic vents allow stale air that gets trapped in your attic to escape outside and they let fresh air from the outside to circulate inside. Without an attic vent, the stale air can seep through your attic floor to the rest of your home.
The following video show how to install a vinyl gable vent. This process is probably best done by a professional, however, the video will give you a good idea about how it is done.

Step 8: Control the Humidity Levels in Your Home
Sometimes the air in your home is too humid and other times it is too dry. You can use a dehumidifier to remove excess moisture from your home. Dehumidifiers are great especially in damp basements.
If the air in your home is too dry, you can use a humidifier to add moisture to the air. For minor low humidity problems, you can instead invest in some house plants and keep them watered.
Well-watered houseplants can keep the air in your home moist
Step 9: Get Your HVAC System Properly Serviced
A properly serviced HVAC system can help improve the quality of the air in your home. According to the EPA , keeping your heating and cooling system components such as your cooling coils, fans, and heat exchangers clean will ensure that your HVAC system is also working to improve the quality of the air in your home.
