Between $3,500 and $4,500

The cost to replace an air conditioner depends on a number of factors, including the size of the air conditioner, the efficiency of the unit, the brand that you choose, the warranty that is given, and the service charges of the company who installs it. Having said that, the average cost to replace an air conditioner in Ontario is somewhere between $3,500 and $4,500. Contact Draft Control Heating and Cooling today for affordable and reliable air conditioning replacements you can count on.

How Much Does It Cost to Replace an Air Conditioner?

As stated above, the average cost to replace an air conditioner in Ontario is between $3,500 and $4,500. The lowest price that you will find will probably be around $1,800  and the highest prices could reach upwards of $7,500. Why the wide range? That’s because there is a wide range of air conditioners that you can choose from, and the final price also depends on the size of your home, your particular preferences, and your budget.

Factors that Affect the Cost to Replace an Air Conditioner

There are many factors that will affect your final cost to replace your air conditioner. The following is an explanation of these factors.

A larger home will require a larger air conditioner than a smaller home

Size of Unit You Need Will Affect the Cost

The larger the area you need to cool, the larger the unit you will need to do the job. A larger unit is made of more material, therefore, it will cost you more.

Air conditioners are measured in tons and use 12,000 Btu (British thermal units) of energy per ton to operate. The smallest units for homes can start at a ton and a half in size or 18,000 Btu and the largest units can be as big as 6 tons or 72,000 Btu.

Bigger Is Not Always Better:

With air conditioners, a bigger unit is not always your best choice. You need to install an air conditioner that is the appropriate size for your furnace. If it is too big, your house will be cold and damp in some areas and warm and humid in others. Also, a unit that is too big will be continually shutting on and off, which means it won’t be running very efficiently. With both furnaces and air conditioners, slow and steady cooling and heating is the most cost efficient.

The Efficiency Level You Choose Will Affect the Cost

An air conditioner that is more energy efficient will cost you more to purchase than one that is less efficient, but a more efficient unit is usually a better choice in the long run. An air conditioner’s efficiency is measured by its SEER (seasonal energy efficiency rating). The higher the SEER number given to the unit, the more energy efficient it is. Most manufacturers sell units with SEER ratings between 13 and 23 SEER, however, you can find some units as low as 6 to 8 SEER.

Cost to Replace an Air Conditioner: Two Stage Air Conditioners cost more than Single Stage ones, but they are much more efficient

Whether You Choose a Two Stage or Single Stage AC Will Affect the Cost

Air conditioners, like furnaces, come with the option of having variable speeds that enables them to adjust the cooling levels in your home.

Two Stage Units:

Two stage models have a low and high speed. When the weather is not super hot, the AC can use its lower stage to dehumidify without having to make extreme changes in temperature. This will make your home more comfortable and will save you on your electricity bill because it requires less energy. Two stage units will cost more than single stage models, but your savings in energy costs make them worth the extra investment.

Single Stage Units:

The single stage models have only one speed, so they tend to blast cold air regardless of how much is actually needed. This tends to produce hot and cold spots throughout your home with lots of humidity.

The Type of Warranty May Affect the Cost

Most air conditioners come with warranties that are fairly similar. They usually include a 10-year warranty on parts and 1 year on labour. Getting an additional 10-year warranty for labour may cost you about $400 extra initially, but it could save you money over the life of your unit. These extra warranties will recover the required preventative maintenance on your air conditioner. If the maintenance is covered, you are probably more likely to have it done and as a result, your unit will also last longer.

A warranty that covers regular maintenance labour is a good investment

A Good Installer May Cost a Bit More But Is Invaluable to the Long Life of Your Air Conditioner

A good installation can make all the difference for your air conditioner. Properly trained and experienced technicians will have the expertise required to ensure that your new air conditioner is installed properly.

A good installer will:

  • Make sure that the unit has been sized properly
  • Be able to get your unit to achieve the SEER rating that it was designed for
  • Register your unit for all the warranties it qualifies for
  • Successfully complete any rebate or incentive programs that are available to you
