Get your new furnace installed without delays

How to Avoid Delays When Buying a New Furnace

1. Avoid the Busy Seasons

You may not always have a choice about timing when it comes to getting a new furnace. For example, if your furnace breaks down right in the middle of the fall/winter season, one of the busiest times of the year for HVAC technicians, you will need to get it replaced then.

However, if you know that your furnace needs replacing, because of its age and lack of efficiency, then a better time to do it would be in the spring or right at the end of summer before the cold weather sets in. HVAC technicians are not as busy during this time and you will probably have a better choice of appointment times that are more convenient for you.

Spring or late summer is a good time to schedule your new furnace installation

2. Hire a Reputable Company with Good Reviews

If you want to make sure that you avoid delays when getting a new furnace, make sure you hire a reputable company. There are a few steps that you can take to make sure you have the best company. They include:

Ask your neighbours, friends and family for recommendations

Your close friends and family are a great place to get recommendations of HVAC companies that they have used and were happy with in the past.

If, however, none of your friends and family members know of anyone they could recommend or if they don’t live in your area, then this would be a good time to get to know your neighbours.

Don’t be shy; people like it when you ask for their opinion and they love to recommend companies that they have had good service from. They often love even more to tell you about the companies that you should avoid!

Ask your neighbours for recommendations

Check online reviews

Go online and check out the reviews for the local companies you are considering. Go to Google and do a search for “furnace replacement companies near me” to get a list of local companies. Click on their reviews to see what customers are saying about them. Watch out for red flags such as “they didn’t arrive on time,” “my furnace wasn’t installed properly,” or “it took much longer than I was told.”

Check consumer sites

Another great resource you can find online are websites that give service ratings to businesses, such as the Better Business Bureau. Search for the companies that you are considering and see what sort of rating they have and what comments are made about their service.

3. Make Sure the Furnace You Order Is in Stock

If you need your furnace right away, then you don’t want to purchase one that might be back-ordered or have to be shipped in. Ask the furnace company to see if they have the model you want in stock. This will help to avoid having your installation date pushed back.

If, however, you have time to wait because you are getting the installation done in the spring, you may not mind waiting a little longer for a back-ordered model if it is what you want and if it’s going to save you money.

Regular Maintenance to Help Your New Furnace Last

A new furnace is a relatively large investment, so doing all that you can to make it last as long as possible is a really good idea. The average furnace will last about 15 years. However, depending on how you look after it, it could last much longer or it could break down sooner.

Regular Filter Changes: You should check your furnace’s filter every month to see if it is dirty and needs replacing. You should at the very least replace it with a new filter every three months. Your HVAC system removes the dirt and contaminants from the air in your home. A dirty filter cannot remove these contaminants as well and they will begin to build up inside your furnace and do damage to the components thus shortening your new furnace’s lifespan.

An annual tune-up: Each year, preferably before the cold season begins, you should get your furnace tuned-up. Contact a professional HVAC technician to do an inspection of your furnace to see if everything is okay. They should check all the parts of your furnace including the thermostat, vents, motor, components, etc. to make sure they are all in good working order. At this time, they should make any necessary repairs or adjustments and replace any parts that need replacing.

Moisture Reduction: Your new furnace will help to remove moisture from the air in your home, however, if your basement has excessive moisture, it may be a good idea to help remove it by using a dehumidifier. Too much moisture can damage your furnace by causing it to rust.

When Should You Replace Your Furnace?

If you are not sure whether or not it is time to get a new furnace, here are some warning signs:

  • Your energy bills are increasing
  • Your furnace is damaged
  • Your furnace is more than 15 years old
  • Your furnace is making strange noises
  • Your furnace repair costs are too high
